With student council elections coming up on Wednesday May 31, Spirit Times’ very own Ava Passarelli sat down for an interview to showcase to the school community why she is a great candidate for Minister of Public Relations.
Q: What made you want to be a grade 10 representative?
A: I love being active in our school community and Student Council is the best way to reach lots of students. Being a Grade 10 Representative meant I could be the voice for students who wanted to see change, had exciting ideas, or a different perspective on issues. High school is about making and creating memories and I wanted to be the person behind that experience for people.
Q: How did you feel when being interviewed for student council and how did you prepare?
A: I was totally nervous. Last year they asked me ‘If you had an Elephant for a day what would you do?’ so I was ready for the worst. This year they also asked me some pretty strange questions but now I understand the importance was to test our quick thinking skills. Luckily my answers seemed to work! To prepare, I looked up interview questions and practised what I would say. I also tried making up some difficult questions when I was bored to test what I would say. I guess it worked!
Q: Since then, what things have you contributed to our student council?
A: Most notably I’ve created posts for the Student Council Instagram like the X-Awards lightsaber battle and Semi-Formal interviews. Behind the scenes I’ve created Spirit Week ideas, the morning announcement playlist, hosted X-Awards, written proposals, helped with games during lunch, set up the banquet hall for Semi-Formal just to name a few!
Q: Could you summarize the role of minister of public affairs?
The Minister of Public Relations is responsible for running the Student Council Instagram, informing and educating the student body, and being an excellent overall communicator.
Q: Why do you think you are a good candidate for the role of minister of public affairs?
Not only have I been an active member of student council but I exemplify the list I mentioned above. Through taking drama I am able to public speak and engage audiences. Taking Comm Tech allowed me to improve on my skills to film and edit. And honestly, I think I am an easy person to talk to that is open to listening to students suggestions and bringing them to the table. To be the Minster of Public Relations you need to be energetic, extroverted, and adaptable and I believe I am all of those things.
Q: Lastly, what plans/improvements do you have for our school community next year if you are elected as minister of public affairs?
A: I believe we should be lifting up student voices in our school community and listening to what they have to say. There hasn’t really been an opportunity to do so this year and that will be a top priority I will insure next year. I also have lots of plans for the social media which would include a total revamp! Specifically, I understood that this year dates for sports events, civies days, and spirit weeks weren’t properly advertised so that will be an important priority. Creating fun videos and posts is a passion of mine and I would love students and teachers to be included in the fun. These would be short TikTok’s/reels, informational graphics, and more professionally shot videos (possibly a recorded game show) would all be coming to the table. Unfortunately I can’t promise any of these things unless I win (so vote for me!)
