April 1 - universally known as April Fools’ day, has been widely celebrated for centuries by various cultures. While the origins of this whimsical day remain unknown, many theories surround it.
Dating back to 1582, historians suspect that this event originated when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Middle Ages, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns, and festivities would end on April 1 in some areas of France. However, the shift from New Year's eve in March to New Year's eve in January had yet to reach the whole population. People were still celebrating the New Year in April and were referred to as "April Fools" by those who had observed the New Year in January.
Another theory in exploration is one about the French poem written by the Flemish poet Eduard de Dene—a nobleman who had sent out his servants on foolish errands on April 1.
Some of History's well-known hoaxes date back to 1957. The BBC television program Panorama ran an April Fools prank showing the Swiss harvesting spaghetti from their trees. The BBC was flooded with people trying to figure out how they could grow spaghetti in their backyards. It was later called "the biggest hoax a news establishment ever pulled" by CNN.
On April 1, 1980, A Boston television station called WNAC-TV aired a false news bulletin at the end of their 6 o'clock segment. It reported that the Great Blue Hill in Milton, Massachusetts was in the process of erupting. Panic flooded the city of Milton, where residents began fleeing their homes.
In 2022, American late-night talk show hosts Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel swapped appearances hosting each other's show. NBC and ABC were simultaneously broadcasting to create a competition between the two shows. They both ended the prank by showing a segment of retired television host David Letterman referring to them as "The Jimmys."
