Entering the floral month of May and the blooming of new beginnings, we also begin Mental Health Awareness Month. This month was established in the United States by the Mental Health America organization, starting around 70 years ago in 1949. This month recognizes the tens of millions of people suffering with their mental health every day. As well as helping spread awareness and honour the professionals who help those struggling. While spreading awareness, it is also important to educate the public about mental health. This month helps create an open space and bring comfort to those who are afraid to speak up.

Everyone copes with mental health differently. Whether it's distracting yourself with a hobby or taking time for yourself, having something to keep your mind off things is a crucial part of healing. A few examples of how you can help your well-being can be talking to a friend you trust, developing a hobby, exercising, eating healthy, journaling, going on walks, and other calming activities. If we do not healthily cope with our mental health, it can affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally, impacting our mood and behaviour.

If you are struggling with mental health and need a trusted individual to talk to, the guidance counsellors at St. Marcellinus will always be available. For teens in Canada, you can contact the number 1-888-668-6810 or text WELLNESS to 686868. Another popular hotline to reach out to is the Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868.

Take this month to focus on the importance of your mental health and well-being, as well as spreading awareness and reaching out to those who may need someone to talk to.
